A LOT OF FUN, GORGEOUS SETS AND COSTUMES, SINGING SPOTTY

We were thoroughly entertained - and was a good venue for our 6th grader too, arguably slightly less risqué than the movie. The sets are perfect, dazzling, exquisite! Same for costumes. I wish the stars had been as enthralling. Sateen was flat and her voice strange enough I wondered if she’d been sick - maybe so. Christian was an understudy, hung in there and did well enough not to distract. Ziegler and Toulouse were wonderful and absorbing, couldn’t separate the actors from their characters, which is how I like it!

SPECTACULAR BUT LACKING

This was an absolutely stunning show. John Cordoza is a phenom as Christian. Austin Durant was amazing as Harold. Andrew Brewer as the Duke was very convincing and talented. Libby as Nini and Gabe as Santiago were insanely sexy and WOW oh so good. (I think Nini should have played Satine). Nick Rashad Burroughs was a rock star. The lighting, the dancing, the supporting cast was insane. But I was disappointed with Courtney Reed. She was disconnected, not at all passionate, rigid, classical...and just not at all sexy. Can she hit all the notes...yes. Can she mark the moves...sort of. I didn't FEEL anything from her. I did from literally every other cast member and they were AMAZING! But Courtney fell short. Maybe she had a bad day. But something got in the way. 6 stars for the cast...4 for Courtney being disconnected, kind of totally unsexy, and dropping the ball. Overall though, 5 stars. This was an insanely good production and I LOVED it...and had a super fun time during the encore.

GREAT PRODUCTION, THIN STORY

First, the actors were all top notch, especially Christian, Satine, and Satine's amazingly flexible friend. The staging iis over the top spectacular, and the costumes are gorgeous . But the book and music -- it was distracting to have a love scene and the actors break into an old Elton John chestnut. The story was pretty hackneyed too -- we've seen it it a hundred times before. So,go for the spectacle, but don't expect a deep, engaging story.

MOULIN ROUGE TOUR SURPRISES!

I saw the movie yrs ago & actually found it strange. Here we are 20 yrs later & I decide to give it another chance bc of its success on Bdway. I was so surprised by the entire show & how all songs were arranged & interwoven so perfectly! The set, lighting, & costuming alone would be reason to attend. The vocal talent was very good most especially the 2 male leads. Acting was well-done. I found myself feeling almost sympathetic towards the antagonist, the Duke, & most empathetic towards the male protagonist, Christian. (What a fabulous, natural vocal instrument he has!) Christian & the featured female lead, Satine, have excellent chemistry together. Other stand-outs were characters Harold & Toulouse-Lautrec. Dancers were flawless and never stopped giving until the curtain fell. Amazing energy all-around. The music director & pit seemed to really enjoy their jobs. A light bite at The French Quarter beforehand and you'll cry "Tutti bravi," at the final curtain just like I did on Tuesday!

A MUSICAL MADE FOR TIK TOK OR INSTAGRAM

Lighting, check. Set, check. Music, check (assuming you can live with 15 to 30 seconds of any one tune). Depth....meh. To be fair, a handful of songs are fully peformed (I would hate to see the licensing cost for this show). The best description on a reveiw I've seen is that the show is "pretty close to karaoke". Doesn't make it bad, just not sure it makes it Broadway. It has its fair share of laughs and the crowd did really seem to enjoy it, including clapping and singing along at times. Will you have fun...probably. Will you remember this as one of the great shows you've seen...probably not, at least I didn't.

MOSTLY MEH

I found the show to be more disappointing than I'd like to say, but that's not due to the cast and crew. Set was lovely and lighting was great. The cast did a good job. I felt this show shouldnt just be called 'Moulin Rouge' but rather some pop-culture rendition of it. They cut a lot of the old songs out or sang a few bars of it and then threw in something current instead. As someone who absolutely loves the movie, this ruined it for me. If you go in expecting something more true to the film version, as far as music goes, you will be disappointed.

SADLY LACKING

I was lucky enough to see Moulin Rouge in the West End a week ago. As it was so good, I did not hesitate to book again while visiting Chicago. I can only say I’m heart broken. Although the set and costumes is just as brilliant, sadly, the performance and sound quality is not. The atmosphere in the theatre was dire… no one danced or sang along which was stark contrast to the electric ‘buzz’ to the UK. So disappointing
