Hairspray

Hairspray at Laguna Playhouse

Why see Hairspray?

Welcome to the Sixties!

Go back in time to the Sixties, a time of social change and fast-moving development, as we join aspiring dancer Tracy Turnblad on her journey to fame! Or local TV, anyway. This firm fan favorite has won a stunning eight Tony Awards, and is based on the original screenplay by avant-garde film-maker John Waters. This family-friendly musical is piled bouffant-high with laughter, romance, and deliriously tuneful songs.

What is it about?

Set in Baltimore in 1962, Hairspray is the story of pleasantly plump teen, Tracy Turnblad, who does whatever it takes to fulfill her lifelong dream of appearing on the popular Corny Collins Show. Can this plus-size trendsetter vanquish the program's reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and end racial segregation on TV without denting her fabulous 'do? Originally a cult classic John Waters film, Hairspray was remade in 2007, starring John Travolta and Michelle Pfeiffer. The remake, which was nominated for a Golden Globe, was one of the top five highest grossing movie musicals of all time.

Hairspray

We have had Overture Broadway season tickets for years and have seen both outstanding and less-than-so productions. Our last show before the pandemic was the incomparable Hamilton and our first since Covid was supposed to be Mean Girls which was cancelled due to (drum roll) Covid. So, our expectations for Hairspray were not high. This show and these performers blew us away!! The talent these kids displayed was amazing and the joy they shared was contagious. Niki Metcalf (Tracy) has a gorgeous voice and the comedy duet with Andrew Levitt and Christopher Swan (Edna and Wilbur) was a standout. My only complaint was that the orchestra occasionally played over the beautiful singing voices. One of the best Broadway shows we have seen at the Overture, ever! Go see if if you can. ... Read more
