MAVIS STAPLES

Truly remarkable performer. And given her age it's just that much more inspiring.

MAVIS STAPLES TOUR

We went to London to hear her and she was wonderful. It was a bit short in my opinion and she didn't need the opening act who were excellent musicians a bit corny but MS Staples performance and group were perfect. Not too loud as some groups can be but the words in her songs are important. A very nice blend of voices and background music.

TOO LITTLE TOO LATE

The opening act was terrible and lasted forever (longer than Mavis), followed by endless rambling speeches by random people who didn’t even know what they were talking about, including calling the Staples Singers the Staples Sisters. After that and a long intermission, Mavis finally came on for a short set, which was okay, but too little too late.

DISAPPOINTING SHOW AT MASSEY HALL

Mavis Staples is a living legend. Her presence on stage is gigantic, even in her senior years. She performs as a true professional. So why is she playing with second-rate musicians? I couldn’t believe the mediocrity of her band. A gimmicky guitarist with no feel. A drummer barely hanging on to the tempo. An uninspiring bassist taking no liberties in his playing. THIS IS NOT SOUL! I expected a figure like Mavis Staples to be playing with pros. These musicians sounded unrehearsed and unrefined, unable to support Ms. Staples in any way. Where were the horns? Where were the keys? At least a rhythm guitarist could’ve kept some semblance of harmony going while “Rick” played his repetitive lines and ear piercing string bends. It didn’t have to be a long show. But one should be able to expect professional level musicianship at ANY show, especially surrounding the likes of such a giant as Mavis Staples. Still had a great time. Went with my mum. It’s all love. PS: what an amazing opener.

MAVIS STAPLES IS A LEGEND, BUT THIS WAS A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT

Mavis is legend, one of the all-time greats. So it was a disappointment that she had a backing band that sounded like an average bar band. And she chose to cover really questionable material (Talking Heads?!? If I want to hear bad Talking Heads covers, I can go to any bad bar -- I don't need Mavis Staples for that!) I actually preferred the opening act, their guitarist was incredible and provided the most interesting musical moments of the night. Mavis I love you forever...but get a better band, and do better songs, please !
